A Brief Account of the Journey Undertaken by His Excellency the Bishop of Anadrim from the City of Milan to His Diocese

Shortly after His Excellency arrived in the city of Milan on 10 September 1742, he was compelled to postpone any further journey towards his diocese due to certain adverse circumstances which immediately affected his health. However, once these difficulties had passed and his condition improved, enabling him to travel with reasonable safety despite the considerable distance, he nevertheless exercised great caution. This was due not only to the principal reasons already mentioned, but also to a severe epidemic then prevailing in that region, which persisted for some time and posed a serious threat. Consequently, both noble and civil authorities advised him either to delay or to shorten his journey to his diocese as much as possible.

Perceiving the growing concern occasioned by this delay, and considering that news of the bishop’s arrival in Milan had already spread beyond the city, he deemed it necessary to act promptly, both to avoid greater inconvenience and to make adequate preparations for his eventual entry into the diocese. He therefore immediately issued a pastoral letter, together with a formal communication addressed to M. I. Segundo das Millaes, requesting information regarding the current state of affairs within the diocese, particularly recent developments and prevailing conditions. In this correspondence, he included several practical recommendations intended to ensure a successful outcome, while indicating that he would choose a more suitable time for his formal installation. Likewise, he requested that similar information be collected from the village authorities and forwarded to him, together with any other matters requiring attention.

Certain representations having been made, in accordance with today’s deliberations
by the Neighbours of H.E. of Sea regarding matters
to be determined according to the rightful disposition of the estate, in the city of Castam,
located thirty legoas from Malao’, together with
the thirty female pupils; concluded likewise with due regard for honour, as well as for the protection and satisfaction
of those entrusted with governance in these present times; all of which occupied its proper
time and was ultimately finalised, such that it has now been restored
to confidence, albeit at some cost of difficulty, and this prompted H.E. to issue a further
remonstrance concerning certain matters previously dispatched.

Regarding this transaction, by order of the Agent of D.ª Madre,
H.E. commanded that certain provisions and sundry
claims arising from the Kingdom be addressed, and upon entering into agreements, immediately began to disburse funds, also granting permission to certain individuals to depart,
and providing means for others who offered themselves for emigration; finally, on the twentieth day of September, this was approved and recorded.

At the same time, a telegraphic message was received from the Or.,
via the aforementioned Agent, concerning his entry into the Str. of Castam, where,
accompanied by his medical attendants and after taking leave of H.E., he arranged
to depart a few days later, together with the individual assigned to the

In this matter, Your Lordship is to ensure that those appointed to the customs houses or royal revenues downstream immediately obey your orders, as previously directed, and that all affairs in their vicinity remain as nearly as stated, entrusted to the said authorities and governed by the laws applicable thereto, some of which are to be enforced under the banner with proper authorisation; furthermore, any prohibited acts shall be duly addressed, together with those responsible.

We sailed through the night, sleeping little and maintaining watch not only due to the favourable weather but also out of caution and unease over certain subtle signs. At dawn, we sighted rivers flowing strongly, such as those at Mota and Moro, their waters emerging at the crest of a hill; the leaves were heavy with dew, and at that hour our position remained uncertain—whether we lay to the west or south. Shortly afterwards, suffering from hunger, we arrived at Canarumda atena embago o chulo, where Talmong had been and Arjai; Day Pasalor had conducted preliminary negotiations, &c.

On the 24th, we set sail towards Sede de Elon, which lies ahead, far distant and remote. As we drew near, we discovered a broad inlet with an entrance and shelter within, situated on the eastern side of Cristany. At the junction known as Actagari de Buxken, we found clear evidence of Chuchim’s presence; the site had been formally established. Father Luis da Mihing of the Aygnt Order, accompanied by Fr. Agust. Melindo, a Spanish member of the Talon group—whose name appears partially illegible in the record—was entrusted with religious duties. J. Cral assumed command upon arrival. Some individuals who had previously visited the area had been expected; we then remained there for thirteen nights. On the tenth day, instruments were distributed among the personnel under Nette’s supervision. The expedition was officially led by Judge Goy Xanez, Chaplain of Crystan Jan, and Calloclajay, who proceeded to establish a new outpost at Ex. hom eten (a high-altitude site referred to as Madmorina). A similar settlement was founded nearby at Alondrillo, under the direction of Chup. This location had formerly borne a shield symbol. Additionally, secret rites were conducted. Since there was no suitable location for distributing provisions or storing supplies, concern arose that a future expedition might encounter difficulties unless adequate planning were undertaken. Having examined the records and arguments presented, we observed in chambers, as previously noted, our witnesses and the deposition concerning the bundles brought to the square by them. We had placed a piece of cloth in the right hand and a linen cloth in the left, accompanied by a confession stating that death had occurred due to exposure and suffocation. We then proceeded to inspect a certain woman; immediately upon entering, we observed her in a state of nakedness, where numerous dark stains were visible. She was lying on her back, mouth open, one hand clenched against the chest and the other extended upwards, making movements suggestive of breath or wind at the moment of passing.

The inspection was conducted thoroughly and formally under proper authority, with the participation of competent individuals. The lighting was adequate, and the examination carried out with due care, including observation of bodily posture, discolourations, and marks. Accompanying personnel included officials designated for such duties, acting in accordance with established practice and protocol. All findings were recorded precisely as observed, without omission or alteration, so that an accurate account might be delivered to the appropriate authorities. Whoever evaluates these facts must do so based upon what has been clearly documented.

On the day of the feast for the deceased, everything was exceedingly costly. I was present at the wake held in the lower part of the house near the Bª da Iotei, where the body lay; however, the proceedings grew more agitated due to a disturbance caused by a confessor who, within the crowd, raised loud lamentations. Several noble individuals then began reading aloud certain selected letters, intended to comfort those present and inspire devotion. This kind of fire, produced by the combination of hot coals and steam rising from the water, we call *fogo nucula tevi*. Nearby, at the appointed site, stood a small wooden platform covered with black cloth and gradually surrounded by mourners. Within this enclosure, a space had been prepared for the gathering, and therein a chair was placed for the chief mourner. Meanwhile, doubts arose among some concerning the anatomical examination, which was conducted with great care upon the body of the deceased, particularly before the final request for food offerings was made. Abram, stationed near the church, oversaw the assembly’s formation, ensuring peace without recourse to force. Yet, even in such gatherings, improper conduct still occurred. Attendance was good, marked by an act of reconciliation following the earlier conflict, attended by many from the surrounding areas. Some also provided illumination. However, due to the late hour, Lomellaz and other elderly persons withdrew, using the bushes for shelter, wrapping themselves in their cloaks, committing various indecencies, and causing unrest—thereby diminishing the solemnity of the occasion.

On the second day of the Dead, various incidents resulted in three separate masses being celebrated.

Today, even during this period, a clear day has dawned under favourable lunar conditions, though here criminal acts have again emerged from the hills and from both sides. Legal restrictions remain in force, prohibiting free passage. These matters now await our examination in due course, under the authority of M. Brola and Tulum Ab.

On the 4th day, I observed newly arrived Lindaz—members of a disbanded confraternity known as Delica, commonly called Ludimilas or petitioners—passing in scattered groups near my district. They were armed with explosives and spears. Most were young men, though some wore jackets and carried baskets containing their evening meals. There was suspicion that they also bore concealed weapons, possibly intended for surveillance, and it was noted that their speech quickly betrayed their origins. Each was equipped according to his means and appeared promptly ready for mischief; thus, two vain and hostile factions arose within the community. They immediately began spreading disorder, which had already become evident at court. I reported this urgently through official channels, demanding action, and have since submitted several formal complaints. Nevertheless, despite repeated notifications to higher authorities, no effective measures have been taken, nor has any substantial response been forthcoming.

On this same day, certain bales wrapped in cloth, known as Kuing, were seized. Their contents were distributed among the men under the supervision of Mandarong Sinaq, originating from the city of Cantam, along with documentation addressed to G., which was likewise examined.

On the 6th day, we proceeded at once to establish a customs post near Cua xio fe, where water and moonlight are present. Work on the customs station continued throughout the delay. Everything was prepared according to standard procedure, and silver currency was stored there. It was at this location that an individual was apprehended over matters concerning the forest, and it was further reported that the woman involved had not yet reached the designated place, having failed to appear at point Lebvaras T. The customs officers were already stationed nearby and had commenced operations. Upon taking decisive action to enforce authority, Spencer acted swiftly. From Verd, and in coordination with Elarrenlia delorlay, it was determined with near certainty that serious dangers persisted in the area. Under these conditions, injuries had already occurred, particularly linked to the bed of the river Cama, where teeth found there—possibly belonging to those who perished—produced ill effects on health. In other cases, when bodies were recovered, uncertainty remained regarding available treatments. Letters were placed facing the special reading stand at Leitoray. Furthermore, Nathonlarem reported that at this location, presentations had been made involving Cangallas appearing in the Naray, accompanied by certain light-skinned individuals believed to be of European origin, around the year 61.

The city was inhabited, though we did not tarry long, having spent some time observing the interplay of moonlight upon arquebuses and abapatos stationed at the Old Callado. Fires still burned there, flickering visibly amidst fragments of vessels, all in good condition.
