Requerimento do piloto-mor das embarcações da China, Marcos Peres Jácome, a [D. João IV], rei de Portugal, em que pede o Hábito de uma Ordem Militar com tença e ofício de Justiça ou Fazenda para casamento da filha
Abstract
This archival document comprises a composite set of seventeenth-century Portuguese colonial administrative and ecclesiastical petitions and deliberations, dated between March 1643 and 17 December (year unspecified), originating from Macau and concerning service in the Estado da Índia. It includes: (i) a petition by Marcos Peres Jacomo, designated Chief Pilot (*Piloto-Mor*) for a voyage to Achin (modern-day Aceh, Sumatra), requesting admission to one of the three Military Orders—Christ, Aviz, or Santiago—with its associated annuity (*tença*), and an office (*ofício de justiça* or *ofício de fazenda*) for his daughter’s future husband; (ii) an ecclesiastical judgment against André Cardoso relating to misconduct on a fatal voyage to Timor, including unlawful compulsion of service and irregular preaching, with conditions for absolution involving a *desantrigo* oath and penitential Masses under papal and canonical authority; and (iii) a later Overseas Council deliberation—endorsed by Álvaro de Albuquerque, Captain-Major of the Indies, and Marcos Piceira, Procurador-Mor—recommending Marcos Peres Jacomo’s formal vow to join the Order of Santiago and granting him a 1,000-réis annual pension upon successful completion of a direct voyage to China. The material reflects institutional mechanisms of patronage, military-religious honour, colonial administration, and ecclesiastical discipline within the Iberian imperial framework.

*Document endorsed ‘Snor̄’ (abbreviation for *Senhor*, i.e., ‘Sir’ or ‘My Lord’)*

Marcos Peres Jacomo declares that he was summoned, by order of His Excellency the Viceroy, to serve as Chief Pilot (*Piloto-Mor*) aboard the vessels presently preparing to sail for Achin [modern-day Aceh, Sumatra]. Given that His Excellency customarily honours and bestows meritorious distinctions upon individuals distinguished by their competence, standing, and loyal service,

the petitioner respectfully requests that His Excellency, in recognition of the substantial service Marcos Peres Jacomo is about to render to His Majesty’s Crown, grant him the honour of admission to one of the three Military Orders—namely, the Order of Christ, the Order of Aviz, or the Order of Santiago—accompanied by the corresponding annuity (*tença*) commensurate with His Majesty’s service.

Furthermore, as the petitioner has a daughter—an *alvará* (royal warrant) of remembrance having been issued in her favour—the petitioner humbly petitions that the individual who marries her be provided with an office, specifically either a judicial post (*ofício de justiça*) or an administrative post (*ofício de fazenda*), appropriate to his rank and qualifications.

This provision is sought both to encourage such a marriage and to further animate Marcos Peres Jacomo to serve His Excellency with even greater diligence and fidelity—indeed, the petitioner requests that this favour be granted *before* he assumes the habit (*abito*) of whichever Military Order His Excellency may be pleased to bestow upon him.

*Endorsed: ‘E Rm.ce’ (abbreviation for *E Reverência*, i.e., ‘And Reverence’—a formal closing formula denoting deferential submission)*

To
The Father [i.e., a priest or ecclesiastical superior]

To inform Your Most Reverend Lordship of the judgment passed upon the guilt of the defendant, André Cardoso.

And returning to this defendant—and not to Rosanos—[the court] found him culpable in respect of the newly instituted voyage to Timor, which proved fatal; and in respect of the preaching undertaken there, as well as for compelling persons to serve contrary to all lawful and canonical provisions.

Timor:
Houses —
He was ordered to seek out his own residence, so that he might be placed under supervision (*statrogénerle*, i.e., *statu rogandus est*: ‘he is to be placed under formal injunction’).

He was told by N. [i.e., the presiding judge or ecclesiastical authority]: “If you do so, you shall be absolved.”
[This condition] pertained to his fulfilment of the aforementioned undertaking (*desantrigo*, i.e., *disantigraphum* or *disengagement oath*—a formal renunciation or release from prior obligations, here likely relating to clerical duties or vows), subject to the further requirement that he celebrate Masses of penance, in accordance with the sacred ordinance promulgated by His Holiness, Pope Saint Ante-Dom (i.e., Pope Saint Damasus I, d. 384; the reference appears to conflate or misrender *Damasus* as *Dom Ante*, a common scribal variant in Iberian ecclesiastical documents), and as prescribed in the *Liber Sextus* (Sixth Book of Decretals), Book XVI, Title IV, Chapter XLIII.

Petition dated 19th of the month of March, 1643.
Joana Roiz

In the enclosed petition, she requests that Your Majesty grant her the favour of:
(i) admission to the newly instituted Habit of the Three Military Orders; and
(ii) a letter of appointment (alvará) conferring the office of Justice or Treasury Official (oficina de justiça ou fazenda), to be held in remembrance (de lembrança), for the marriage settlement of one of her daughters.

The Council deliberated as follows: Given that the aforementioned Marcos Peres intends to undertake a voyage directly to China—and, upon his return to this Realm, will have done so without deviating from the direct route to China—the Council considers his proposed service to be both novel and exceptionally demanding, entailing considerable difficulty and absolute necessity. In order to encourage him to perform this voyage with the utmost vigilance and diligence—and to ensure he rectifies any shortcomings by retrieving the requisite cattle (‘buscar as vacas’) prior to departure—the Council recommends that he be required to make a formal vow (promessa) to join the Order of Santiago. In addition, he should be granted an annual pension of one thousand réis, payable upon his safe return, provided he has conducted himself honourably and fulfilled his duties satisfactorily.

Dated December [year not specified]
Signed by the Captain-Major of the Indies,
Álvaro de Albuquerque — brother of Vasco’s daughter.
