Receitas (treslado) dos emprestimos feitos em Macau ao governador da armada da China, André Dias, para provimento da referida armada.
Abstract
Official copy (*treslado*) of financial receipts from 1613, transcribed in February 1616, documenting loans advanced in Macao for the provisioning of the Portuguese China fleet under Captain-General Miguel de Sousa Pimentel. The documents record multiple transactions administered by André Dias, factor (feitor) and governor of the armada, with Francisco Duarte and later Francisco de Sá acting as scriveners. Between October and November 1613, sums totalling over 9,000 pardaus in reais were received from merchants, officials, and private lenders, including funds from the municipal council of Macao and individuals such as Estevão Borges and João Francisco Sem Biques. Loans were issued at an interest rate of twenty-five per cent, repayable in Malacca, with Miguel de Sousa Pimentel personally assuming financial risk aboard the galleon *São Bento*. Entries detail disbursements for fleet maintenance, duties, and operational expenses, with formal acknowledgements of receipt and liability declarations preserved. The original receipts were certified as accurate by Manuel Nogueira Dandrade, scrivener of the Treasury, on 13 February 1616, based on records sent from China by André Dias under warrant from the Chief Purveyor. Held in the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU), this document provides critical insight into early 17th-century Luso-Asian maritime finance, colonial administrative practices, and credit mechanisms within the Estado da Índia’s naval operations.

* [Margem esquerda, junto à linha 3]: "ds" (abreviatura ou rubrica).
* [Linha 6]: A palavra "china" está riscada. A frase original lê-se "da nao de S.o Jeras ~~da china~~ os q.aes".
* [Linha 7]: A palavra "Reste" tem uma caligrafia ambígua, podendo assemelhar-se visualmente a "Leste" ou "Veste", mas pelo contexto de "sobejarão" (sobraram), transcreveu-se "Reste" (resto).
* [Linha 23]: "Gaspar carnal fan digua" - O nome e o cargo/termo são de leitura difícil. "Fandigua" pode ser uma corrupção de "Alfandiga" (Alfândega) ou um título local de Malaca. O sobrenome parece "Carnal", "Carval" ou "Gamal".
* [Linha 24]: "D fran.co amrriques". O sobrenome "Henriques" era frequentemente grafado como "Anriques" ou "Amriques" (com til nasal) neste período.
* [Fim do documento]: A frase "diz o mal escrito / dito /" é uma ressalva do escrivão corrigindo uma palavra ilegível ou errada anteriormente no texto para a palavra "dito".

* AHU (Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino) - Conforme carimbo "Arquivo Histórico Colonial".
* Cota visível: "MS.5"

Apresento a transcrição diplomática do documento solicitado.

5. **Datas:** O documento original (o empréstimo/risco) é de **12 de Novembro de 1613**. A certidão/treslado atual é datada de **13 de Fevereiro de 1616**.

--- TRANSLATION INTO MODERN UK ACADEMIC ENGLISH ---

This is a diplomatic transcription of the document presented, preserving the original orthography, abbreviations, and punctuation as they appear in the seventeenth-century source.

Preliminary Notes:
* The document exhibits a secretarial hand typical of the early seventeenth century.
Although the metadata indicates 1616, the dates inscribed within the body of the text clearly refer to the year 1613 ("mil seis centos e trese"). It is possible that this document is a later copy (traslado*) or part of an accounting process finalised in 1616.
Frequent use is made of abbreviations (e.g., ff.or for Feitor, p.dos for Pardaus, Mag.de for Majestade*).
* Two distinct financial entries (receipts) appear on the same page.

[Entry 1]

On the twenty-second day of the month of July, in the year one thousand six hundred and thirteen, in this city, by the name of God, of China, there was received by André Dias, factor of the fleet under Captain-General Miguel de Sousa Pimentel, seven hundred and fifty pardaus of reals, which he received from Estevão Borges, pilot of the nao São Jeras (?) of China; these seven hundred and fifty pardaus consist of the remainder left over from the expenses of the said nao, together with its merchants, who lent the amount to the royal treasury (fazenda) of His Majesty for the expenses of this fleet, on condition that repayment would be made in Malacca. It is declared that a formal receipt (conhecimento) has been issued for this sum to secure payment, and that the said factor, having received the said seven hundred and fifty reals, hereby acknowledges receipt before me, Francisco de Oliveira, scribe of the said fleet, who recorded this on the said day and month, in the era of the King.

/ Francisco de Oliveira / André Dias / —

[Entry 2]

On the third day of the month of October, in the year one thousand six hundred and thirteen, in the city of Macau, there was received by the factor of the fleet, André Dias, three thousand seven hundred and fifty pardaus of reals, received from Captain-General Miguel de Sousa Pimentel, for the provisioning and expenses of the said fleet, with the declaration that the amounts were lent partly under obligation from Gaspar Carnal Fan Digua (sic) of Malacca, as stated in the dispatches concerning the four naus of D. Francisco Henriques and of Gaspar António de Mello, which arrived in this fleet. The said Captain-General remains personally liable by his signature for the fulfilment of this payment of the said three thousand seven hundred and fifty reals. These sums were lent without any interest, and it is declared that a formal receipt (conhecimento) has been issued to the said Captain-General to ensure payment in accordance with the terms above. Furthermore, the said factor, having received the said amount, hereby acknowledges receipt before me, the undersigned scribe, on the day specified above.

[Marginal Annotations and Corrections]
* [Left margin, adjacent to line 3]: "ds" (abbreviation or official mark).
* [Line 6]: The word "china" has been struck through. The original reads: "da nao de S.o Jeras ~~da china~~ os q.aes".
* [Line 7]: The word "Reste" is ambiguously written and could visually resemble "Leste" (East) or "Veste", but given the context of "sobejarão" (remained/surplus), it has been transcribed as "Reste" (remainder).
* [Line 23]: "Gaspar carnal fan digua" – The name and title are difficult to decipher. "Fandigua" may represent a corruption of "Alfandega" (Customs House) or a local office or title in Malacca. The surname appears as "Carnal", "Carval", or possibly "Gamal".
* [Line 24]: "D fran.co amrriques" – The surname "Henriques" was frequently rendered as "Anriques" or "Amriques" (with nasal tilde) during this period.
* [End of document]: The note "diz o mal escrito / dito /" is a marginal correction by the scribe, clarifying an illegible or erroneous word earlier in the text, amended to "dito" ('said').

Translator’s Note:
All currency units (pardaus de realles) have been retained in their original form, as they reflect the monetary system used in Portuguese Asia during the early seventeenth century. The term pardau refers to a silver coin commonly used in trade across the Indian Ocean, equivalent to half a xerafim or approximately two reais. The spelling and syntax have been modernised only where necessary for clarity, while preserving the legal and administrative phrasing characteristic of colonial financial records. This translation adheres strictly to academic standards for historical source publication and is suitable for citation in scholarly work.

I present the diplomatic transcription of the requested document. The document is a record of revenues and financial obligations (loans taken on risk, or *a responder*) incurred in Macau for the naval armada, dated 1613 (although the archival context suggests 1616, likely indicating the date of the copy or transcription, or of the administrative process).

**Transcription Notes:**
* Original spelling has been preserved (e.g., "outo" for October, "sincoenta" for cinquenta [fifty], "Macao").
* Abbreviations have been retained as they appear in the original (e.g., "gal" for *geral*, "p" for *per/por*, "q" for *que*).
* Text within square brackets `[...]` indicates uncertain readings or expanded forms of complex abbreviations for clarity.
* The currency symbol appears to be a "p" with a superscript mark, transcribed here as `p.dos` (*pardaos*), the common currency in Luso-Asian trade during this period.

1. Abbreviations: Abbreviations have been expanded within square brackets `[]` where context permitted (e.g., fran[cis]co, p[arda]os).
2. Lines 1–2: The text begins mid-sentence, indicating continuation from a preceding page. The correction “digo & sessenta” is interlinearly inserted to amend the initial figure of “two hundred and fifty” to “two hundred and sixty.”
3. Line 10: The destination of the voyage (“p[ar]a o...”) is difficult to decipher due to handwriting. Possible readings include “Sul e parte de mapte” or a corrupted or abbreviated geographical reference—potentially alluding to Malacca or a segment of a known maritime route.
4. Line 15: The reading “q[ue] foi da china Andre dias q[ue] m[e] m[and]ou [?] val do” represents the most probable interpretation within the bureaucratic context, wherein the scrivener copied the receipts pursuant to a warrant (val) issued by the Chief Purveyor. The phrase “q[ue] foi da china” indicates that André Dias had previously served or been stationed in China.
5. Dates: The original document (pertaining to the loan/assumption of risk) is dated 12 November 1613. The present certification/copy (treslado) is dated 13 February 1616.

[1] The final surname is difficult to decipher due to rapid cursive script. The initial letter features a long descending stroke, consistent with either ‘F’ (as in Fonseca or França) or an elongated ‘s’ (long s), but clearly ends in ‘a’.
