Filippo Manini e don Vincenzo Torrente, non accade parlare, quando Dio già gli ha chiamati a sé. Delle delazioni qua insieme contro il P. Fernando Menchiet e Domenico Fucchi, degnoza 44. opo delle stidie, mentre già si c’offende la falsità. Qui si maestra, ma non si crede se prima non sieno poste in essere, e ben provate. La riri- gna dei beni della nobilissima famiglia intorno alla inusitata la sua ignavia coi corpi del P. Filippo Fiorello, speciale di usurpazione di cose pubbliche non mai lasciate dal P. Filippo Manini dopo la sua morte. Di ciò non havessi io sapu- to nulla. He commends the recent establishment of an Apostolic Vicariate within the diocese, expressing most obedient adherence in this present Pontifical charter, as reported in the letters of D.V., dated 10 April 1677. He pledges obedience with every bond of Catholic unity to our Holy Mother Church, just as sons of the Society are bound to do. Indeed, throughout these Articles, the entire body of the faithful—whether other doctors added under the same ecclesiastical authority, or those who have been duly and successfully baptised into sacred names—is clearly established under the august yet modest pastoral oversight, owing no allegiance whatsoever to any secular prince; for their spiritual register has been definitively separated from civil jurisdiction. This has been plainly communicated by the aforementioned D. Reo Dominici Celiensis, as one sent for the salvation of souls, entrusted with pastoral care over the entire region.
Moreover, it has become evident through direct observation how the people themselves have received the Word and embraced the principles of religious obedience, in accordance with the constitution and spirit of our Institute. Yet, wherever any individual, through interpretation of the faith, has fallen short, they have been duly corrected by venerable authority. But (and this is far more serious), certain secular officials, along with regional magistrates—whose jurisdiction in such matters is negligible—have dared to oppose these measures. Nevertheless, given the renowned piety of the King (which they could not hear without outcry and condemnation), we confidently appeal to Your Lordships and the proper authorities, urging that due action be taken where even the slightest impediment to the communion of the Religious Society has been raised, and where internal explanations have been suppressed: may the fruits of justice and righteous indignation (though interwoven with caution) be exercised without hesitation.
Indeed, I see clearly how greatly those who approach this matter justly will be affected, and that many who have acted thus will inevitably face judgment accordingly. As for myself, I remain in my assigned post, where the first brothers of the medical order are now expected. I shall report fully and promptly on the matter once developments occur, as instructed.

These letters I write and inform Your Most Eminent Lordship concerning the Eucharist, as prescribed, addressed to the Reverend Father Claviger, Frinale, V. Landinario, and to the Roman Father. For I anticipate my future journey from the ships, upon disembarkation at the site of the martyr’s death. Furthermore, I send to Num the items entrusted to me by C. Ignatio Nictaris, my Roman agent. I have instructed any associate of Thomas to report to the superior of this clandestine mission.
10 February 1693. To that place I hereby notify the Reverend Doctor, and through him to all those under his authority, that mention has been made by the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide that I should intimate to him two pontifical diplomas, a summary of which I append below. I commend their strict execution with the prompt obedience due to all mandates of the Holy See.
In the first, by virtue of the Bull of 22 October 1696, Our Lord Pope Innocent XII of holy memory declares the Kingdom of Tonkin to be separated from and independent of the Diocese of Macau.
In the second, issued on the same day, he renews the Constitution promulgated on 7 June 1664 by the late Pope Clement X, in which it was decreed that Bishops of the East Indies may not and ought not exercise acts of jurisdiction within the territories governed by Vicars Apostolic; and it expressly forbids the Professed of Goa, Macau, and Malacca from impeding the jurisdiction of Bishops or Vicars Apostolic in the Kingdom of Siam, Cochin China, Siampe (Sembilan), Cambaya, and other adjacent regions, etc.
I strictly enjoin upon you, Reverend Doctor, that as regards yourself and any other members of the Minim Order, you ensure the observance of these Apostolic letters. Rome.
After writing this, I deemed it worthwhile to forward directly to Your Most Eminent Lordship the original documents themselves. These you, Reverend Doctor, shall deliver to our Minim Fathers, exacting from them the most scrupulous obedience, so that throughout the entire Church it may be evident how fervent is the devotion of religious men toward obedience to the commands and the silent will of the Apostolic See.
