En esta santa casa tome por officio de rogar a nro Snor me desse a entrar dentro em mi anima sua santa Voluntad: com firme proposito feito della complir, e com firme Esperança y dabit perficere qui deberit uelle. Qui so De por sua acostumbrada misericordia acordarse de míos, e com mucha confiança interior senti ser sua Voluntad de ir aquellas partes de Malaca, onde nueuamente se bivieram Espanhos dous Reys en vna tierra chamada Macassar, para lhes dar razon e doutrina de vna santa fee, fazendo-lhes os Articulos e mandamentos em sua lingua com alguma deuocion e logo voluntariamente me teve. Venieron abaxerse quantos razon é, charisimos hermanos, ser muito favorecidos de nós, e para que saibam pedir ades a creyentami de sua fee e gracia para guardar sua ley. Sacarei em sua lingua o Pater noster e o Ave Maria e outras orações, como é a Confissão geral, para que confessem seus peccados quotidianam; e esta lhes servirá de Confissão sacramental até que Dº pro nea de confessores que entendam sua lingua. O P. Francisco de Mansilhas com outros P.º Malauares quedam com os Fianos do cabo de Comorin, onde elles estão; não agno jo falta os P.º e inuernaram em Moçambique. Com outros que espero que vendrão irão em companhia dos principes de Cochim quando forem a suas terras. Espero em Dº nro Snor que nesta Viage me há de fazer muita merced, pois com tanta satisfação de minha anima e consolação igual me faz merced de me dar affeitir por sua santissima Voluntad de eu ir aquellas partes de Macassar, onde nueuamente se bivieram Espanhos; e estes tão determinado de cumprir o que nro Snor me deu affeitir em minha anima, que não o fazendo me parece que iria contra a Voluntad de Dº N. S., e que nem nesta Vida nem na outra me seria merced. [Page 5] [Main Text] Transcript of a letter written in 1545 by Friar Manuel Fernandes from São Tomé to the Most Reverend and Most Pious Dom Paulo Gestavo, Bishop of Goa, stationed at the 10th Legion of Saint Faith (São Fé), concerning his journey to the Macacares.
Beloved in Christ, most dearly cherished brethren:
May the grace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ ever abide with you, for favour and assistance. Amen.
Jaffnapatam has not been captured, nor has sovereignty over that kingdom been conferred upon the king designated to rule it—namely, the ‘Fijiano’ (i.e., the ruler of Jaffna). He declined to proceed with the formal investiture because a royal vessel—sent by the King of Pegu—arrived on the coast; this ship enabled the King of Jaffnapatam to seize certain resources, and until these confiscated assets are recovered, the directive issued by the Supreme Governor cannot be implemented. It is God’s will that this be accomplished, should it serve His service.

Year 1545
Upon arriving at the Holy House, I undertook, as my solemn duty, to entreat Our Lord that He would grant me the grace to admit His holy Will into my soul; resolving firmly to fulfil it, and trusting confidently—*‘Qui habet perficere qui debet velle’* [‘He who is bound to will, shall bring it to completion’]—that He would enable me to do so. By His customary mercy, may God remember me; and with deep interior confidence, I perceive it to be His Will that I proceed to those parts of Malacca where Spaniards have recently settled under two kings in a land called Macassar, there to instruct them in the truths and doctrines of the holy Faith, expounding to them the Articles of Faith and the Commandments in their own tongue, with due devotion—and forthwith, willingly, I have embraced this calling.
Beloved brethren, it is altogether fitting that they should submit themselves to us, for they are greatly favoured by our Lord; and it is essential that they learn how to petition Him for the grace of faith and for strength to keep His law. I shall translate into their language the *Pater Noster* and the *Ave Maria*, together with other prayers—including a General Confession—so that they may confess their daily sins. This form shall serve as their sacramental confession until such time as God provides confessors who understand their language.
Father Francisco de Mansilhas, together with other Malabar Fathers, remains among the Fianos at Cape Comorin, where they are stationed; I am unaware whether any Fathers are lacking there. They wintered in Mozambique. Others, whom I expect shortly, will accompany the princes of Cochin when they return to their territories.
I place my hope in Our Lord God that on this voyage He will bestow upon me great grace; for He has already granted me profound spiritual satisfaction and equal consolation in moving my heart to embrace His most holy Will—that I should go to Macassar, where Spaniards have newly established themselves. So resolute am I in fulfilling what Our Lord has impressed upon my soul, that were I to fail in this, I should judge myself to be acting contrary to the divine Will, and thereby forfeiting grace both in this life and in the next.
Even if no Portuguese or Ambonese ships sail to Malacca, I shall embark on any vessel belonging to Moors or Gentiles; for I hold such complete trust and faith in Our Lord God, beloved brethren in Jesus Christ—for whose love alone I undertake this journey—that even if no ship were to depart from this coast this year, I would set out aboard the *patamar* (a small native craft), confident and undeterred: all my hope is directed solely towards the love and service of Our Lord God.
I earnestly beg you, most beloved brethren in Jesus, to offer sacrifices and unceasing prayers on my behalf, that God may be mindful of my sins and receive my commendation into His merciful keeping.
I expect to depart for Malacca towards the end of August, as ships are reported to be lying there.

They are to depart, awaiting instructions from Monção. Ultimately, I shall send you a firm order—supplementing the existing royal provision for the Captain of Malacca—authorising him to arrange embarkation of all necessary supplies for the voyage to the islands of Macassar, *pro amore Domini nostri* [‘for the love of our Lord’]. Please dispatch the following items by this next *patamar* (i.e., scheduled coastal vessel or dispatch boat): a small Roman Breviary; and convey my warmest and most sincere regards to my dear friend Cosme Fres—whom I have not written to directly, as this letter will be carried by all three of my companions.
Some foreign individuals have recently arrived who do not speak Portuguese; it is imperative that they be taught the language, for otherwise no one here will be able to communicate with them effectively. In my forthcoming letter from Malacca—which I shall write at greater length—I shall describe in detail the *fianos* (i.e., formal oaths of allegiance or fidelity) administered there by Zieron, as well as the two *poliçiones* (i.e., ecclesiastical ordinances or pastoral injunctions) recently issued, which require you to supply personnel capable of sustaining and advancing our Holy Faith. Since this house bears the name *Santa Fé* (‘Holy Faith’), its works must duly reflect that designation. We shall write more fully on these matters in letters dispatched by the *patamares* departing in July.
May our Lord assist us in His holy glory. Amen.
I write this in this life; we shall not see one another again on earth.
