Exa. o Dr. Encarregado de Negócios de Portugal na China Copia — Governo Ecclesiástico da Diocese de Macau — Nº 28 — Ilmo. e Exmo. Sr. — Em resposta ao officio de V. Exa. datado de 11 do corrente mez, te- nho a honra de informar como se segue: = 1º A questão de Giang-tê teve lugar três ou quatro annos depois de os padres fran- cezes tomarem conta das missões de Hainan, de 1853 a 1854. — A questão foi resolvida em Cantão entre o consul francez e o Vice-Rei, mas não sei se as $200 sa- hiram dos cofres de Cantão ou foram pagas pelos chinos gentios que causaram os dannos. — 2º Os chinas não podiamos nos comprar terrenos, por não consentirem isso as autoridades indígenas — O terreno foi comprado no porto de Hoi-haw a Joseph James Poynter, e a escritura foi registada no consulado inglês. — Esta compra prova simplesmente que a missão de Macau emprega dinheiro em Hainan para occorrer às necessidades dos christãos d’alli e que não está atida aos recursos d’esses christãos — A escritura de compra d’este terreno está archivada no Seminário. — 3º Em fevereiro de 1884 soffreram os christãos alguns atropellos dos gentios em Coloane, Ngao-ca e Siem-tin-san — O Pe.

Most Illustrious and Most Excellent Sir,

In reply to Your Excellency’s dispatch dated the 11th of the current month, I have the honour to report as follows:

1. The Jiang-tê incident occurred three or four years after the French missionaries assumed responsibility for the Hainan missions, that is, between 1853 and 1854. The matter was resolved in Canton through negotiations between the French consul and the Viceroy; however, I am uncertain whether the sum of $200 was drawn from the Canton treasury or paid by the Chinese non-Christians who caused the damage.

2. As local authorities did not permit Chinese Christians to purchase land, the plot was acquired at the port of Hoi-haw from Joseph James Poynter, and the deed was registered at the British consulate. This transaction merely demonstrates that the Macau mission allocates funds towards meeting the needs of the Christian community in Hainan, and is not solely dependent upon the resources of those local Christians. The deed of purchase for this land is archived at the Seminary.

3. In February 1884, Christians suffered certain abuses at the hands of non-Christian locals in Coloane, Ngao-ca, and Siem-tin-san. The Father...
