This volume was dispatched by His Paternity (Sua Paternidade), the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, to one of the Jesuit provinces in Japan—specifically, to the Jesuit residence known as *Nós Pedro e Iffão* in Lisbon—on 4 January 1747. It should be noted that this document was not intended for transmission from the Province of Japan (which, by this date, had been formally suppressed following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Japan in 1614 and the subsequent prohibition of Christianity), nor did any comparable transcript then exist within that province.

This volume was dispatched to the Procuratorship of the Province of Japan in the city of Lisbon aboard the ship *São Pedro e São João*, in January 1747. It is not intended for permanent retention in Lisbon; rather, it remains the property of the Province of Japan. Should it remain there, its loss—or, more precisely, its unauthorised retention by some official—would be virtually inevitable.
