Benedict XIV, Pope. To our most beloved son in Christ, [the Archbishop of Goa], greetings and apostolic blessing.
We have received from His Excellency the Archbishop of Goa an account of his fortunate arrival in that city, together with a detailed report on the grave disorders discovered there during the prolonged vacancy of the see; the remedial measures he has implemented; and the considerable success—by God’s mercy—attained thereby. These efforts have been notably strengthened by the protection afforded by Our Most Serene Majesty [the King of Portugal] and by the royal instructions issued to His Excellency the Marquis of Castelnuovo, Viceroy of Portuguese India, who has executed them punctiliously and with great zeal.
We declare that it would be a dereliction of our pastoral and apostolic duty were we not to render to Your Majesty the thanks rightfully due. We therefore express them formally herein, and earnestly implore Your Majesty’s continued and distinguished beneficence towards that extensive archdiocese.

We gladly lend our steadfast support to the ecclesiastical authorities, so that they may duly discharge the pastoral responsibilities entrusted to them. We wholeheartedly endorse—and shall continue always to endorse—the exemplary and consistently admirable conduct exemplified by Your Majesty; and, reaffirming what we have previously written to Your Majesty concerning our unceasing intercession—indeed, there is not a single day on which we do not commend You to the Almighty God with fullness of heart—we impart to Your Majesty and to Your entire Royal Family the Apostolic Blessing.
Given at Rome, at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, on the 26th day of January 1746, in the sixth year of Our Pontificate.
