To the Deputy Magistrate of Xiangshan County, Guangzhou Prefecture, appointed by special imperial commission, with three additional ranks conferred and eight entries in the official record of meritorious service—plus two further entries for military merit—Xing…, hereby issues this official mandate concerning investigation and disciplinary action.
We have received, on the fifteenth day of the ninth month of the thirty-second year of the Qianlong reign (1767), an official notice (dié) from Zhang, Acting Magistrate of Xiangshan County, transmitting a communication from Nanhai County. That communication states: having punished and dismissed certain individuals—including Miāzhī and others—by means of public cangue and corporal punishment, and having recovered silver fines, it is now ordered that the foreigner *Gāngākām* be forthwith repatriated to Macau for custody. You are instructed to receive *Gāngākām*, who has been forwarded to your jurisdiction, and to dispatch him under escort to the Macau *yìmù* (foreign headman), for formal handover and subsequent delivery to his kin for supervision and restraint. He is strictly forbidden from leaving his residence again or engaging in further disruptive conduct. You are further required to report the date of receipt and to submit documentary evidence thereof. Enclosed is a copy of the full communication for your reference.
Additionally, we have received notification from Shunde County urging the prompt conveyance and handover of *Gāngākām* to this county. In compliance, we have issued an official receipt (*huìzhào*) and reported the date of receipt back to Nanhai County. We now order the immediate transfer of *Gāngākām* to this sub-prefectural office (*tīng*).
You are accordingly directed—as a matter of administrative procedure—to forward *Gāngākām*, who has been delivered to you, to the Macau *yìmù* Lōuluōduō for formal acceptance. He shall then be placed in the custody of his relatives, who must undertake to supervise and restrain him, and he must not be permitted to leave his residence again or cause further disturbance. The *yìmù* shall submit a written acknowledgement of custody (*shōuguǎn zhuàng*), and the relatives shall provide a formal receipt (*lǐngzhuàng*) confirming receipt and assumption of responsibility. Both documents shall be submitted to this office for examination and onward transmission. Furthermore, please issue an official stamped receipt (*huìzhào*) to the attending bailiffs for their return and account settlement; and kindly report the matter formally to the Military and Civil Administration (*Jūnmín Fǔ*) for the attention of His Excellency the Prefect, as a matter of official courtesy and inter-administrative protocol. Enclosed is a copy of the full communication for your reference.
One foreigner, *Gāngākām*, has been escorted to this sub-prefectural office. In accordance with the foregoing, he is now to be transferred forthwith.
This official placard (*pái*) is therefore issued, commanding the *yìmù* Lōuluōduō and associated officials to comply immediately: accept *Gāngākām* into custody upon his arrival; ensure he is taken without delay by his relatives, who shall assume full responsibility for his supervision and restraint; and strictly prohibit his further departure from home or engagement in any disorderly conduct. The *yìmù* shall promptly furnish a written acknowledgement of custody, and obtain from the relatives a formal receipt—three copies of each document being required—and submit them to this office for review and onward transmission. Failure to comply promptly will not be tolerated. Speedy execution is imperative.
