黃漢臣分別追回各原籍收管仍移始興縣查明張總古果否
回籍一併嚴加約束如再潛往澳門查出重究幷嚴飭與夷嗣後
毋得催倩民人遠出亦不許民人在粵受僱遞送書信以杜奸弊
原獲番書傳同湘人喫嚕哆等當堂銷燬等因奉此除將各
犯追回原籍外擬合就移倍牒過廳希即嚴飭與夷嗣後毋得催

Office of the Assistant Magistrate (Zuotang) of Xiangshan County, Guangzhou Prefecture,
His Excellency Zhu, with promotion to the first rank,
for official notification, dated 6th day of the 5th lunar month in the 7th year of the Qianlong reign (1742).
Received on 29th day of the 4th lunar month in the 7th year of Qianlong from
His Excellency Feng Can, Acting Magistrate of this county.
Received on 20th day of the 4th lunar month in the 7th year of Qianlong, pursuant to an order issued by
the Provincial Judicial Commissioner (Anchasi).
His Excellency Wang, Left Censor-in-Chief of the Censorate and concurrently Governor-General of Guangdong, having reviewed the memorial submitted by the Judicial Commissioner’s Office, directed as follows:
‘With regard to the case concerning one Zhang Dayou—of unknown origin—delivered to the authorities at Hepu County by the local garrison, together with foreign-language documents (fan shu) and silver coinage: having examined the circumstances, it is hereby ordered that Zhang Dayou be returned to his native place and placed under strict surveillance. The matter is now referred for further instruction to the Viceroy of Liangguang.’
The above directive having been duly received, the following instructions are issued accordingly:
This office hereby orders the County Magistrate to act immediately in accordance with the foregoing, and to ensure that both Zhang Dayou and Huang Hanchen are repatriated to their respective native counties for custody and supervision. Furthermore, the Magistrate of Shixing County is requested to verify whether one Zhang Zonggu has indeed returned to his native place. All three individuals are to be placed under rigorous control. Should any of them be found to have secretly travelled to Macau, they shall be severely punished upon discovery.
In addition, the foreign residents (Yi) are to be formally admonished: henceforth they must refrain from recruiting or coercing Chinese subjects to travel abroad; nor may Chinese subjects residing in Guangdong province be employed by foreigners to carry letters or correspondence—such practices being expressly prohibited to prevent illicit activities.
The foreign-language documents seized in the case, together with the Hunan native ‘Chiluoduo’ [i.e., *Chiluoduo*, a transliterated Portuguese or Macanese personal name, possibly ‘Cristóvão’ or similar], are to be publicly destroyed in open court.
Pursuant to the above, and having already arranged for the return of the individuals concerned to their native places, this office now transmits the present dispatch to the Prefectural Yamen, requesting that the foreign residents (Yi) be strictly admonished in accordance with the foregoing provisions. Moreover, ‘Chiluoduo’ and other foreign parties concerned are instructed to appear before the County Magistrate without delay, so that the seized foreign-language documents may be formally destroyed in open court.
Having received the above, and having issued formal injunctions prohibiting Chinese subjects in Guangdong from accepting employment to carry correspondence on behalf of foreigners, this office now issues the present official placard (pai), addressed to the designated foreign headman (Yi mu), instructing him to enforce the following without delay:
(1) That foreign residents (Yi) henceforth desist absolutely from recruiting or inducing Chinese subjects to travel abroad for the purpose of delivering letters or messages;
(2) That the seized foreign-language documents be brought before the County Magistrate forthwith for public destruction in open court.
Non-compliance will not be tolerated. Prompt execution is required.
