É Deus dos estrangeiros. Não tem sexo conhecido, nem sua mãe teve marido, portanto é filho de pais incógnitos! É semel- hante aos animais, como os porcos e carneiros que não conhecem a sua linhagem; nunca comprehendeu a santa doutrina de Confúcio, nem prestou homenagem aos Deuses, à Terra e aos Astros! Insulta e quebra a machado os nossos santos (pagodes) e tem desde tempos remotos espar- gido esse corrimento de matéria náuseabunda. [Page II] [Texto Principal] Anexado ao ofício N.º 3-A de 29 de junho, 1891 Do Consul de Portugal aos portugueses residentes no distrito consular de Cantão Edital = Demétrio Cinatti, cônsul de Portugal em Cantão, faz saber aos súditos portugueses residentes neste distrito consular, que correm na cidade rumores, os quais levam a supor que os acontecimentos do Vale do Yang-tze se podem propagar nas províncias de Guangdong e Guangxi. O corpo consular e as autoridades locais tomaram todas as providências preventivas que as circunstâncias requerem para garantir a segurança e direitos da comunidade estrangeira. Enclosed with despatch H.3.A of 29 June 1891: Anti-religious placards affixed in Canton during the month of June 1891.
1. From the first day of the eighth lunar month, meat of Jesus will be sold at Man-zeng’s butcher shop for eight cash per catty.
2. Jesus originated from swine semen! He is the god of foreigners. He has no known sex, nor did his mother have a husband—therefore he is a child of unknown parentage! He resembles animals such as pigs and sheep, which do not know their lineage; he never understood the sacred doctrine of Confucius, nor paid homage to the Gods, to Earth, or to the Stars! He insults and destroys our holy images (pagodas) with an axe, and from ancient times has spread this nauseous contagion. Every seven days, a sacrifice composed of five elements is offered: the penis of a boy, women’s breasts, eyes, entrails, and the flesh of abandoned children. Only in this way can the origin of Jesus be explained.

You men—scholars, merchants, and peasants—keep your households secure; each one fulfil his duty; be obedient to your parents, loving towards your siblings, loyal to your emperor, and truthful with your friends! Do not allow yourselves to be deceived by His empty words and doctrines, nor by the shadow of foreign silver, for within the sweet lies the bitter. Whoever, having received knowledge of this warning, still renders homage to the unclean seed of the pig shall be cast out as a poisonous worm.

From the Portuguese Consul to Portuguese subjects residing in the consular district of Canton
Notice: Demétrio Cinatti, Portuguese Consul in Canton, hereby informs Portuguese subjects resident within this consular district that rumours are circulating in the city suggesting that the events in the Yangtze Valley may spread to the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi. The consular body and local authorities have taken all necessary preventive measures required by the circumstances to ensure the safety and rights of the foreign community.
Although there is no reason to anticipate that these incidents will develop into public disturbances, I wish to remind my compatriots that the people of Canton are readily stirred by even the most trivial provocations. It is therefore entirely advisable that each individual, in the interest of all, exercise greater than usual caution in their interactions with the Chinese population under these exceptional circumstances.
I reiterate this recommendation because an incident of negligible significance—occurring on Monday involving a foreigner believed to be Portuguese—has assumed disproportionate proportions, circulating among the Chinese public in various versions, all of them exaggerated and...
