Ilmo. Sr.
Tenho a honra de informar a V. Ex.ª
que o Il. Governador do Bispo do Macau
officiou ao Il. Governador daquella colónia,
pedindo que pelas autoridades chinesas fizessem
insensibilizar os christãos de suas
aldeias, cujas casas tinham sido roubadas
e em parte destruídas pelos rebeldes.
"O Il. Governador do Macau, em 5 de
10 do corrente, enviou-me aquelle
documento, para eu informar, dizendo-me:
"Ainda relativamente ao meu telegrama
do dia 8 do corrente, tenho a
honra de enviar a V. Ex.ª offício que recebi
do Governador do Bispo, esperando
que V. Ex.ª me informe acerca do seu
assumpto o que mais conveniente
se lhe afigurar, devolvendo-mi-o novamente.
Devo grande, etc."
Respondi seu officio n.º 105, de 12 do corrente:
"Tenho a honra de devolver a V. Ex.ª
o officio do Il. Governador do Bispo,

e que acompanharam o officio N.º 131, de 10 do corrente, cumpriu-se informar o seguinte:
O governo chinês ainda não paga em Cantão indemnização alguma pelo prejuízos materiaes soffridos na presente crise, pelas minas estrangeiras, nem os soffridos pelos indígenas convertidos.
No entanto parece-me conveniente apresentar desde já a precisa reclamação às autoridades chinesas, a favor dos christãos, a que se refere o officio do Ilmo. Governador do Bispoado, para que possa ser atendida em occasião opportuna.
O que se torna indispensável, pelo que os meus collegas têm feito, é que S. E. apresente uma relação dos individuos, cujas casas foram destruídas ou combadas, e indique o valor dos prejuízos que cada um soffreu, quer nos bens moveis, quer nos immoveis, além doutros esclarecimentos precisos, tais como

nome e local da missão, residência dos queijosos, etc., sem o que não me parece possível fazer-se quaisquer reclamações. A simples indicação de que os christãos de uma Sada aldeia foram roubados, e que tiveram as suas casas deterioradas, não me parece ex bastante para já, e muito menos para a época em que a China liquidar tal assumpto, e que não se sabe quando será.
Para evitar enganos na tradução da china. Dos nomes próprios que têm caracteres especiais, e que devem figurar na reclamação, também me parece conveniente que S. E. o Sr. Governador do Pórtodo apresente à V. E. escrita n'igual língua.
A repetição da proteção pedida a favor dos nossos christãos, sabe V. E. o que eu, no cumprimento dos meus védios, fiz, e

Em 12 telegrafei ao Governador de
Macau, dizendo:
"Costa Ter havido Distúrbios Mai-
Chow tropas chinesas demoradas
sessenta boiras; rebeldes seguem
Tun-Kum.."
Na mesma data telegrafei ainda:
"Rebeldes Rio Leste seguem Sinerid
Noroeste. Alguns chineses profan-
ram cemitério Cantão estes fatores
causados pequena importância,
não reclamar por causa de sepul-
turas portuguesas."
No dia 13 officiei ao Vice-Rei, a seguir
dos seguintes:

N.º 2.º — que me conta que uns 20 a 30 chinezes foram ao cemitério estran-
jeiro, próximo do "Macau Forte", e se
ali destruíram algumas sepulturas,
entre as quais há algumas portu-
guesas. Considero os prejuízos ma-
teriais sejam de pequena importân-
cia, o facto em si é barbaro, por
que offende os nossos sentimentos
religiosos e o respeito pelo morto,
e mas presente. Difícil dos sos na
China, pode fazer com os soldados.
Depois, S.ªquelle desacato, ouveu-se
voltar-se contra o estrangeiro.
Venho, por isso, rogar a N.º 2.º —
S.ª que tomem as precisas providên-
cias para que as sepulturas sejam
reparadas, e os soldados severamen-
te castigados nos termos da lei.
Desejo a N.º 2.º muitos prosperidades.
A 16 telegrafei ao Sr. Jornalista de Macau:
"Serviço completado. Vice-Rei mandou"

reparar sepulturas. Semelhantes pequeno mandarim, prender quatro criminosos, não se ser naturalmente apresentados. Nada consta a perfeita rebelião, logo que tenha notícia.

Das sepulturas portuguesas só a uma. Destocaram um pouco a febra tumular. A pedra de uma outra, alheia, foi quebrada. O Vice-Rei, em officio recebido a 17, diz-me que: os estragos foram reparados, o mandarinete da localidade deméltido; e imposta a pena de um mês. De "canga", a um dos criminosos, e a de cinco anos de prisão aos outros.

Em 16 telegraphei ainda:
"Consta ter havido, Serturbio."

Recebendo um reporte o seguinte
telegrama do Sr. Governador:

PORTUGUESE CONSULATE IN CANTON, No. 20 A 139
Canton, 20 October 1900
To the Most Illustrious Sir,
I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that the Most Illustrious Governor of the Bishop of Macau has communicated officially with the Most Illustrious Governor of that colony, requesting that the Chinese authorities take measures to pacify the Christians in their villages, whose houses had been looted and partially destroyed by the rebels.
The Most Illustrious Governor of Macau sent me this document on 5 October of the current year, accompanied by the following note: "With reference also to my telegram of the 8th of this month, I have the honour to forward to Your Excellency a letter received from the Governor of the Bishop, and I trust that Your Excellency will advise me as to what course appears most appropriate in the matter, returning the document to me thereafter. I remain, etc."
In response, I replied by my despatch No. 105, dated 12 October of the current month: "I have the honour to return to Your Excellency the letter from the Most Illustrious Governor of the Bishop..."

and in connection with Despatch No. 131 of the 10th of the current month, I have the honour to report as follows: The Chinese government has not yet made any indemnity payments in Canton for the material losses sustained by foreign firms during the present crisis, nor for those suffered by native converts. Nevertheless, it appears advisable to submit forthwith the precise claim to the Chinese authorities on behalf of the Christians, as referred to in the dispatch from the Right Reverend Bishop’s Administrator, so that it may be addressed at an appropriate opportunity. What renders this step indispensable is the course already taken by my colleagues, namely that His Excellency

the name and location of the mission, the residence of the missionaries, etc., without which I do not consider it possible to make any claims. The mere statement that the Christians of a particular village were robbed and that their homes were damaged does not seem to me sufficient at present, let alone for the time when China will settle such matters—whenever that may be. To avoid errors in translation from Chinese, and particularly regarding proper names containing special characters—which must appear in the claim—I also consider it advisable that His Excellency the Governor of Macao submit to Your Excellency a written document in the same language. The repeated request for protection on behalf of our Christians is known to Your Excellency.

The measures adopted by the Viceroy. God is great, etc. On the 12th I telegraphed to the Governor of Macau, stating: "Costa Ter—serious disturbances at Mai-Chow; Chinese troops delayed for sixty hours; rebels proceeding towards Tun-Kum." On the same date I also telegraphed: "Rebels from Rio Leste advancing northwest towards Sinerid. Some Chinese have desecrated the cemetery at Canton; these incidents are of minor significance—do not make representations regarding Portuguese graves."

IN CANTON, No. 2.—I am informed that approximately twenty to thirty Chinese individuals went to the foreign cemetery near "Macau Fort" and there destroyed several graves, among which were some Portuguese ones. While I consider the material damages to be of minor significance, the act itself is barbaric, as it offends our religious sentiments and the respect due to the dead—matters of profound importance. Given the delicate situation of foreigners in China, such an affront could easily provoke retaliatory actions against them. Therefore, I hereby request that Your Excellency take the necessary measures to ensure that the graves are properly restored and that those responsible are severely punished in accordance with the law. I wish Your Excellency every prosperity.
On the 16th, I telegraphed to the Journalist in Macau: "Mission completed."

No reports have been received regarding any outright rebellion, as soon as intelligence becomes available.—Sinei. Of the Portuguese graves, only one was affected. The tumular mound of one grave was slightly disturbed. The tombstone of another, unrelated grave, was broken. In a dispatch received on the 17th, the Viceroy informs me that: the damage has been repaired, the local mandarin has been dismissed; and penalties have been imposed—one of the criminals sentenced to one month in the "canga", and the others to five years’ imprisonment. Three. On the 16th I telegraphed further: "It is reported that there has been, Serturbio."

On the approaching Saturday, His Excellency Macau received clarifications regarding whether it would be advisable to issue a denial. Upon receiving the following report, a telegram from the Governor arrived stating: "On the night of Friday to Saturday, some Chinese attempted an attack near Porto Ceres; they were repelled and fled. It is believed this was an act of revenge, resulting in several arrests. The cause remains unclear. On Sunday, São received an alarm signal without apparent reason, though everything has since returned to normal." Furthermore, matters remained tense throughout the week now coming to a close.
