The article asks "Macao, a multicultural city?" and seeks to answer this question through the literary analysis of the final (posthumous) novel by Henrique de Senna Fernandes, **Os Dores**, fictionally set in the 1940s and 1950s. The central thesis maintains that the city can be read as a space of encounter between **East and West** since Portuguese governance in the sixteenth century, and that this history materializes in the novel through "marks of multiculturality" expressed by characters, spaces, customs, and social relations. Methodologically, the work articulates a theoretical framework on multiculturalism with the interpretive reading of the literary text, conceiving the novel as a privileged source for the representation of diversity and alterity in concrete historical contexts. Subsequently, an analytical and practical approach is undertaken, aimed at identifying and discussing, within the narrative and descriptive configurations of **Os Dores**, the signs of cultural coexistence, its tensions, and forms of social negotiation. It is concluded that Macao, as staged by Senna Fernandes, is not a mere exotic setting, but a cultural device in which colonial continuities, the circulation of influences, and modes of coexistence are simultaneously recognized — allowing multiculturality to be characterized as a historical hallmark of the city.

The article analyzes the representation of Macau in the novel/fictional work "As Dores" (《朵斯姑娘》) by Henrique de Senna Fernandes, understanding it as a literary device that stages the coexistence—and friction—between Portuguese and Chinese cultural matrices in the city. The authors argue that the narrative mobilizes characters and trajectories to reinscribe twentieth-century Macau into a space that is simultaneously geographic and sociocultural, marked by a symbolic division between "Chinese city" and "Christian city". Methodologically, the study proceeds with an interpretive reading of narrative and discursive elements (character configurations, settings, and cultural isotopies), articulating the textual analysis with a historical-cultural framework of Macau's unique status as Chinese territory under Portuguese administration. As results, the work reveals itself less as a mere panoramic representation of the city than as a discursive construction of intercultural relations: the circulation between spaces and identities highlights tensions, asymmetries, and persistent "distances" between communities that coexist without fully integrating their codes. It is concluded that "As Dores" transforms the urban experience of Macau into a cultural and aesthetic problem, offering a literary map of Western heritages and their local reconfigurations.
